Actually, if you look back through church history...this isn't that far fetched that a community would devolve into this. Back in post-midevel days...the scandanavian church (particularly in norway) was known for selling pew space to wealthy families. They would pay to have their names on "spots" in choice places inside the buildings. Hey, history is circular!
